Today marks the second Sunday of Advent - the Sunday of Peace.  We pray for Peace in all aspects of our lives - our homes, our schoolyard games, our communities and our world.  On Thursday at 1:30 p.m, the junior students participated in our second Advent Liturgy.

To help the students to participate in the loving act of sharing and giving during this time of Advent, they are invited to collect items to donate to the Shepherds of Good Hope.  At this time of year, there are many items the Shepherds need to assist the people who are staying at the shelter. The Grade 4 students are encouraged to bring in disposable face wipes and pocket sized kleenex packs, as well as clean pillow cases. Thank you to those who have already sent an item or 2 in - you have helped to make someone's Christmas a little more comfortable and happy!
---------------------------
Dear Parents & Guardians,

Field Trips and Events are an integral part of learning that often require volunteers. We are asking that if you intend on volunteering this year, that you share a Criminal Background Check with your child`s teacher before Christmas vacation (December 21st 2018). You can share by making a photocopy and sending it with your child OR taking a photo of the document and sending it via email. We look forward to having you come along as a volunteer to share in our learning journey!  If you would like to apply for a police record check, please go to ocsb.ca/volunteers.

Thank you in advance for your collaboration,
Junior Teachers

------------------------------
A reminder that Mme Corriveau is taking the Gr. 4 students sliding (weather permitting) on Tuesday afternoon. Please ensure your child has an extra pair of dry socks / mittens and a helmet, if required. Thank you.

-------------------------------------

Our next Math unit in both grades is Data Management. Grade 4 students will be using Stem and Leaf plots and  Double Bar graphs, while in Gr. 5 the focus will be on Broken Line Graphs and survey design.

----------------------------

In Language Arts, the gr. 4 students have mostly completed their cereal boxes and commercials, and the read-aloud the Gr. 5 students have been enjoying finished on Thursday. Once we wrap both of those up, we will be working on Christmas activities.

Sunday 2 December 2018

Week 14: Dec 3-7 The First Week of Advent

Today marks the first Sunday of Advent - the Sunday of Hope.  We have Hope in God's faithfulness to us, and in His promise to us of Eternal Life.  On Friday at 10:00 a.m., the junior students participated in the first of 4 Advent Liturgies to remind us of the importance of Hope in this season, and in our world today.

We are continuing our Advent Project this year, when we collect items for the Shepherds of Good Hope. Grade 4 students have been asked to bring in facial wipes and travel size Kleenex, both of which are readily available at the dollar store. The facial wipes are disposable pre-moistened wipes (not diaper wipes) and cost about $1.25 per package. The kleenex are the pocket packs. Grade 5 students are asked to bring in adult sized warm socks and / or balaclavas. Both groups are also invited to send in pillow cases. Please send items in with your child if you are able to. Thank you in advance!

Other happenings this week:
-Gr. 4 students will be visiting the Gr. 6 class to view their Indigenous Peoples projects on Tuesday morning
-our school's Advent Mass is on Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. Parents are welcome to attend.
-our Junior Week 2 Advent Celebration is Wednesday afternoon
-Friday during 3rd block we will be visiting our Faith Buddies and sharing activities of Hope with them.

Here's where we are in math and language:
Math - we took a little longer than expected on time, elapsed time, the 24h clock (Gr. 5) and measuring long periods of time (decades, centuries, etc) (Gr. 4). We will have a wrap-up test this week to see who has consolidated the concepts, and move on to data management in both grades. This unit will likely take us to Christmas.

Language - the Gr. 4 students are completing their cereal boxes, and marketing them to their target audiences. Most are filming commercials on the ipads. They are very entertaining so far! In Grade 5 we are continuing our read-aloud A Dog's Life, and after each day's reading we evaluate some aspect of what we read about that day. We are compiling these in a slide deck in their language folder in Drive. You are welcome to check them out anytime!

Sunday 25 November 2018

Week 13: November 26-30

Hopefully everyone had the opportunity to order Spirit Wear to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of St. Clare school. There will be some upcoming events, likely during Education Week, including the opening of the Time Capsule that was sealed into the walls when St. Clare was being built. I wonder what things we will find inside?

Speaking of upcoming events, the Gr. 4 students will be going on a field trip to the Museum of Science and Innovation in February. We will need some parents to accompany us. It is essential that if you want to come with us, you have your police check for working with the vulnerable sector and have handed it in to the office. If you are interested in joining us, you should be able to get one before February. There are also 2 other trips in the planning stages.

Upcoming events this week:
-a Be Well assembly on Thursday
-Week 1 Advent liturgy for junior students in the gym on Friday

Here's what we've been up to this week:
Math - both groups reviewed telling time on both analogue and digital clocks. They are now working on elapsed time, which is a challenging concept. They are used to regrouping in 10's and 100's, but in time, we regroup in 60's. Sixty seconds in a minute, sixty minutes in an hour, etc. It is hard for them to remember, and a calculator is not much help. We will continue to work on this next week.

Language - Gr. 4 finished Nibble Nibble Jenny Archer, and looked at various marketing strategies to target kids or adults as purchasers of cereal. They have just started to design their own cereal boxes, and will then design a way to promote it. They can record a commercial using the green screen, imovie, WeVideo, or a comic strip using Pixton, among other choices.

Gr. 5 are listening to A Dog's Life, and each day they discuss some point of the story with a partner, then write an evaluative piece about it in their slide deck. It has been quite interesting so far! We are about half-way finished.

Sunday 18 November 2018

Week 12: November 19-23

At our PD Day on Friday, the topic was Numeracy and Mathematics. We teachers had the opportunity to look into the new Ontario Government's Focus on the Fundamentals of Math strategy, which really puts the focus on developing critical thinking, flexibility with number concepts and taking a balanced approach to the development of mathematical thinking. This is not the drill and practice, or memorization of facts popularized in the media, this is really developing number concepts, fluid reasoning, and problem solving. Here is a link to the Parent's Guide, for your reference, if you are interested.

Thank you to everyone who supported the United Way through Crazy Hat/Hair Day, Twin Day, etc. We appreciate your generosity!

Here's what we are working on:

Math - we are finishing up the brief geometry unit on angles, and will have a short test this week. The grade 4 students need to be able to identify acute, obtuse, right and straight angles, and the benchmark angles of half a right angle, halfway between right and straight, and know that angles are measured in degrees. The grade 5 students need to be able to measure angles using a protractor, and to use a protractor to draw angles given the measurement in degrees. Our next unit is a measurement unit on time and elapsed time, which we will start this week.

Language - Grade 4 students are listening to a read-aloud named Nibble Nibble, Jenny Archer. We were waiting for it to arrive from another library, and it finally came on Thursday! It is a short but funny book, and they will enjoy it. They were also asked to bring in an empty cereal box if possible, as we are evaluating the target audience for the marketing of the box. Grade 5 students are listening to a longer read-aloud, A Dog's Life, and each day have a short evaluation to write on something we heard that day. You can follow these short evaluations in their drive, if you want to.

Week 11: November 12-16, 2018

Image result for remembrance day Canada 2018 free clipart
Thank you to all of the veterans, parents, grandparents, and siblings who were able to join us in remembrance on Friday. We will remember them, and their sacrifice.

Last week, we had our Faith Buddy day on Wednesday morning, and joined with the kindergarten students to look at Dignity of Persons. We talked about including everyone, and making them feel welcome. We finished by designing a page for our book, where each team of buddies wrote, "I can..." and drew a picture to illustrate it. It was nice to see everyone working together!

This week is a short week, due to the PD Day on Friday. There are no classes for students on Friday. I am looking forward to meeting many parents on Thursday night during interview evening. If you have not yet booked an interview, but would like to, there are a few spots left Thursday evening, or send me a note and we can meet at another time.

Thursday is also Crazy Hair/Hat day! Wear your craziest hat and/or wildest hairdo and bring a loonie or a toonie for United Way!

Here is what we are up to:
Math - We have finished our patterning unit in both grades and will begin a very short unit on angles (geometry). We are following the MathUp program, and this unit is only 3 lessons long, followed by a short test. The next unit is measurement, including time and elapsed time, which is a difficult concept. Telling time on an analogue clock, and calculating elapsed time are both very challenging for students. This is something you can easily practice at home, by asking what time it is (on an analogue clock), asking what time it will be in 25 minutes, how long you have before you have to leave for something, etc. Grade 4 have to tell time to the nearest minute, Grade 5 have to know to the nearest second, and will also have to know time on the 24 hr clock.

Language Arts - We are still waiting for the Read-aloud to arrive from the school we are borrowing it from, so we have not yet started in Grade 4, but hope to in a day or 2. In Grade 5 we have started reading A Dog's Life, and have made our predictions of what the story will be about.

Sunday 4 November 2018

Week 10: November 5-9, 2018

*Don't forget - tomorrow is picture retake day!

Thank you to all of the parents and grandparents who came out to our Bible Blessing Ceremony on Tuesday morning. It was great to see so many of you! The children were so excited to receive their very own bibles. A big THANK YOU to school council as well, for purchasing the bibles, and to Mrs. Desjardins for inscribing them for each student. They were much appreciated.

Thursday, November 15 is Parent-Teacher interview evening. Information was sent home with the Progress Report about interviews, and there is a link on the school website: here . Just click on the name of the teacher you want to book with, choose a time, and fill in your name and your child's name. Once you click "Confirm", the interview is booked, and appears on my calendar. If  you would prefer a telephone interview, or would rather meet at a different time, please send me a note through the blog. Some parents would prefer a meeting that is longer than the scheduled 10 minutes during interview night. Please call the school or send me a note through the blog so that we can set up a before or after school time to meet.

Friday at 10:30 a.m. we will be observing Remembrance Day with a liturgy in the gym. Parents are welcome to attend.

Here's what we've been up to:

Math: we have almost completed our Patterning unit in both grades, and will have a short test this week, likely Wednesday, on patterns and pattern rules (Start at 10, add 3 each time), and on determining a specific term in a pattern (what would the 50th term be?) in both number and geometric patterns. We have done many examples of each in class. Our next unit is Geometry.

Language Arts: In Grade 4 we are hoping to start a read aloud this week for Evaluating, a funny book named "Nibble, Nibble, Jenny Archer. The students will really enjoy it! The Grade 5 read aloud for the Evaluating unit is A Dog's Life, by Ann Martin.

Week 8: October 22-26

Congratulations, St. Clare Community! Together, we raised over $3300 for Cancer research during our Terry Fox walk! As a result, on Friday afternoon, 8 teachers (including Mme Mitton) were pied in the face by the top fundraising students. It was a blast! Check out the pictures on Twitter.

Next week, the Eco Team is encouraging Litterless Lunch days for the week as part of their Waste Reduction Initiative. They are also collecting gently used clothing and textiles on Wednesday, to donate to charity.

Grade 4 students should have brought home an invitation that they made for you to invite you to the Bible Blessing Ceremony on October 30 at 9:30 a.m. in the gym. Please join us if you are able.

On Wednesday, we welcomed a new teacher candidate from the University of Ottawa, Ms. Rhodes. Our previous teacher candidate, Miss Robert, has had to defer her placement for medical reasons and is therefore no longer with our class.

This week, we will begin patterning in math in both grades. Here is what they need to learn:
Grade 4 are expected to: • describe, extend, and create a variety of numeric and geometric patterns, make predictions related to the patterns, and investigate repeating patterns involving reflections;

Grade 5 are expected to: • determine, through investigation using a table of values, relationships in growing and shrinking patterns, and investigate repeating patterns involving translations;

In Language Arts, Grade 4 students are presenting their "All About Me" presentations. Grade 5 students are presenting their second biography about someone they admire, and working on their "Sell This Haunted House" persuasive writing activity. Both groups have finished their first CASI reading test, and I now have a baseline idea of their knowledge, thinking, application and communication skills on a grade level text.

Sunday 14 October 2018

Week 7: Oct. 15-19

Here's what we have been up to this past week:

Math:  In both grades, we have looked at rounding, and the importance of being able to estimate. Sometimes we need an exact measurement or answer (like in an Olympic race) and sometimes an estimate is more efficient (like the approximate number of people at an event). We have been working on our estimation skills using Estimation180, and they have improved already! Now we are learning to round numbers, so that it can help us to estimate. We have practiced rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 (Gr. 4) and to the nearest tenth (Gr. 5) using the Rounding Mountain and a little song. You can hear it here. There is also a cute Number Rock video on rounding, you can see it here. Our next unit is patterning, and we will start it shortly.

Language: We have been enjoying learning all about our classmates as they present their biography slideshows. Each Gr. 5 student has presented one biography that they have written on a classmate, and is now working on another biography of a person they admire. It can be anyone, from someone they know well, to someone famous, or someone they have heard about. They need to explain why they chose that person, and why they admire them. The Gr. 4 students are working on their All About Me presentations. They are gathering photos of their items and telling the class why those items are important and meaningful to them. For presenters in both grades, I am watching particularly for how well they face the audience as they present (make eye contact), whether they speak in a clear, loud voice, and whether they have rehearsed their presentation or have trouble pronouncing some of the words. The rubrics with the expectations for each grade are in their Language Hapara folders in their Drive.
*Both grades will be writing a CASI reading test this week in order to have a baseline score for the beginning of the year.

Upcoming Events:
-The Bible Blessing Ceremony has been scheduled for Tuesday, October 30 at 9:30 a.m. An invitation will be coming home for parents of Grade 4 students to attend this ceremony. Each Grade 4 student receives their own copy of the New Testament, blessed and inscribed with their name, given to them by Father. Thank you to Parent Council for purchasing and inscribing the Bibles each year.
-The Terry Fox Wrap-Up Assembly is on Friday at 3:00 p.m. I wonder how many teachers will end up getting pied in the face?

Monday 8 October 2018

Week 6: Oct 8-12

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you are having a wonderful weekend with your family and friends. We all have so much to be thankful for.

We had a great time during our Terry Fox walk on Thursday - the weather in the afternoon was absolutely beautiful! Thank you for your donations for Terry Fox - the children are excited, because for each level of money raised, more teachers get "pied" in the face! You can watch the little promo video here.

We also had our first Faith Buddy Day, on the topic of Community. The Gr. 4 (morning) class were paired with Mrs. Marchant's kindergarten class, and the Gr. 5's, since they were with their morning classes, were paired with 2 different primary classes. Ask them about the activities they did with their buddies.

Each class also completed a STEM challenge this week. Gr. 4 were building a waterproof shelter for their little family who were caught in a rainstorm while hiking in the woods, and Gr. 5 were learning about "purifying" water using everyday materials.

Here's what we've been up to:

Math - we have moved into addition and subtraction, with and without regrouping, in both grades. We are looking at various methods of doing both of those things, including the algorithm. Students have experimented with adding and subtracting using base 10 blocks, by drawing pictures, using an open-number line, by breaking the number down and adding the components together (expanded form), etc.  Ask your son or daughter which method works best for them, and have them explain it to you. Next we will be working on rounding.

Language Arts - Gr. 4 were working on a Thanksgiving activity, which most completed. We will be writing descriptive paragraphs this week, and are working towards a CASI reading test soon. Gr. 5 are presenting their biographies of a classmate, and will be following that up with a biography of a person they admire, living or dead, famous or not. They will also be completing a CASI reading test before the end of October.

Don't forget:

*Wednesday is Picture Day! Bring your smiles! 😃😃😃😃

Our Terry Fox Walk/Run scheduled for 9:30 a.m. tomorrow morning has been rescheduled for 1:15 p.m. tomorrow afternoon, due to the high risk of thunderstorms in the morning. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help with supervision, we hope you are still able to come in the afternoon!

Sunday 30 September 2018

Week 5: Oct 1-5

Tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day in the ocsb, because Every Child Matters. During Library time this week, students listened to the story When We Were Alone, by David Alexander Robertson. This story, which is recommended for a K-4 audience, is about a grandmother's memories of her time at a residential school, and about empowerment and strength. We will follow this up with designing our own Orange t-shirts for display in the hallway. You can read about Orange Shirt Day here. Your child is encouraged to wear an orange shirt or t-shirt to school Monday, Oct. 1.

Our Thanksgiving Mass will be held on Wednesday morning, at 9:30 a.m. Some students from the Gr. 4 class have been chosen to read at Mass. Parents are always welcome to join us in the gym.

Thursday will be a very busy day! First block will be our Annual Terry Fox Walk. Thank you to those parents who are able to volunteer to supervise during the walk, and to everyone who raised funds for this very important cause. We have talked about Terry Fox, who he is, and why he ran from Newfoundland to Thunder Bay.  Second block will be our first Faith Buddy block. The Gr. 4 class is partnered with a primary class to participate in "buddy" activities focussed on Community. I will post pictures on Twitter! In the afternoon, with the Gr. 5, Mrs. Burgham and I are planning a STEM challenge to wrap up the week - it should be a lot of fun!

Don't forget:
- Friday is a P.D. Day; there is no school for students. It is Christian Community Day for teachers.
-Monday is Thanksgiving - have a great long weekend!
-Tuesday, Oct. 9 is the Cross Country Running Meet - good luck to the team!
-Wednesday, Oct. 10 is Picture Day! Bring your smiles!

In Math, in both groups, we had a short review quiz on Friday, just to check for understanding of place value, including standard form, expanded form and word form , as well as addition with regrouping. Any students experiencing difficulty with these topics will be sitting down 1:1 with either myself or a parent volunteer. We will move on to subtraction and decimals next.

In Language Arts, Grade 4 are finishing up their paragraphs about their "Dream", and Grade 5 students are interviewing each other to write their biographies. These will be presented to the class before they begin researching and writing the biography of a person they admire.

Sunday 23 September 2018

Week 4: Sept 24-28

Wow, that was some weather on Friday! Our prayers are with those students, families and schools affected by the winds and tornadoes that touched down in our area on Friday, Sept, 21. Please note the following in response to the damage:

In math this week, both groups worked on games and activities designed to give them a better understanding of place value. Gr. 4 are required to read, understand and record numbers to the ten thousands place, and Gr. 5 to the hundred thousands. Each group completed an Exit Ticket, which is a brief evaluative snapshot, on Thursday. Any child who did not demonstrate an understanding of standard, expanded and word form of numbers, as well as the value of digits in place value, went over the exit ticket 1:1 with either myself or my parent volunteer to ensure understanding. We are moving on to applying our knowledge to addition and subtraction in the coming week.

In Language Arts, both groups will be learning about Terry Fox and his incredible contribution to raising funds for cancer research. This is in preparation for our own Terry Fox walk on Oct. 4. (Please remember to return permission slips if you haven't already.) Gr. 4 will be connecting the story of Terry having a dream and the steps he took to reach his to their own dreams and the steps they will have to take to reach theirs. Gr. 5 will look at a biography of Terry, as we are reading a biography of Thomas Prince right now. We will follow that up with writing biographies of our own in the coming weeks, and presenting them to the class.

Sunday 16 September 2018

Week 3: Sept 17-21

It was great to meet so many of you at Curriculum Night on Wednesday!  If you were not able to make it, here is a link to my presentation. Please let me know if there is anything you would like more information about, or if you have any questions.

We had a very busy first full week back, and it looks like our schedule will look like this:
Grade 4 will have their library time during their Tuesday Religion period, and Gr. 5 will have their library time during their Friday Religion period.

In Math, we completed the rest of the Week of Inspirational Math videos and activities from Youcubed, the Stanford University site produced by Jo Boaler. They really enjoyed growing their brains, and trying new activities! We have moved on to our Numeration unit; making and ordering numbers to the ten thousands place (Gr. 4) and to the hundred thousands place (Gr. 5). This week, as our warmup, we will be playing a fun game called JunkIt that you can play at home, to emphasize the importance of place value. All you need is a dice, a piece of scrap paper, and a pencil or pen. Set up your game board like this:
Take turns rolling the dice and placing the number you rolled on a line. You have 2 opportunities to "Junk It" if a roll is not what you wanted. The player with the highest number wins! You can switch it up and have the player with the smallest number win. There is some luck, and some strategy involved.

In Gr. 4 Language Arts, we finished our Read-Aloud about Marcenia Lyle/Toni Stone, and have moved on to a shared reading activity, Zero's Math Adventures. We wrote a short paragraph about a dream we have for our future, and some obstacles we may have to overcome to reach our dream.

In Gr. 5 Language Arts, we finished our Read-Aloud, Beautiful Warrior, The Legend of the Nun's Kung Fu, and moved on to the shared reading activity, which was a pamphlet entitled, "Being a Genie". The students have read the information and are considering whether they may actually be Genies themselves! They are also designing pamphlets of their own, with their own creative "Being a ___". I can't wait to find out if I'm a cat, unicorn, fluffy bunny or rainbow sprinkle cupcake!

Terry Fox walk permission forms will be coming home soon. It is being held Oct. 4 this year, and volunteers are always needed!

Please remember to return:
-chocolate money or unsold chocolates; more are also available if you would like to sell more
-the forms that were sent home on the first day if you haven't already

Sunday 9 September 2018

Week 2: Sept 10-14, 2018

We had a great first week back at school! What a wonderful group of Gr. 4 and Gr. 5 students I have this year! We are settling into our room and adjusting to routines. Here's what we did last week:

In Language Arts, we wrote little "Gr. __ Times" newspapers, that tell briefly about our vacation memories and what we are most looking forward to learning this year. These are posted on the bulletin board at the back of the classroom, take a look on Wednesday night if you are able to attend Meet the Teacher / Curriculum Night!  We have also begun our first Strategy Unit, Self-Monitoring, which give students strategies to deal with unfamiliar vocabulary and to understand confusing texts. In Grade 4, we begin with the read-aloud Catching the Moon.  It is one of my favourites, based on the life of Marcenia Lyle, also known as Toni Stone, who was the first woman ever to play professional baseball in a men's league.

In Grade 5, we begin with the read aloud Beautiful Warrior: The Legend of the Nun's Kung Fu, which is a beautifully illustrated story of two strong female warriors.

Math, we have been working on the Week of Inspirational Math activities put out by Jo Boaler from Stanford University. Her research into brain science and how everyone can be good at math is inspirational! The videos and activities that she and her team develop help students learn that speed is not as important as thinking deeply and making connections when it comes to math. We will be completing the activities this week, and moving on to the Numeration strand in both grades.

As part of the New Pedagogies for Deep Learning, students will have the opportunity to participate in STEM challenges on a biweekly basis. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Students are given a challenge, or problem to solve, and some simple materials to solve it with. They must work as a team and use their Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Character and Citizenship skills to find a solution to the problem. We started this week with a spaghetti and marshmallow tower challenge. Ask your child what solution they came up with, and how successful they were! Also, check out the pictures posted on Twitter in the sidebar.

A few more notes to remember:
*library day for Gr. 4 will be Tuesdays, and for Gr. 5 will be Fridays; your child will have the opportunity to borrow a library book each week and return it the following week, starting the week of Sept 17th

*thank you to everyone who sent in kleenex and other assorted supplies! Please remember to send indoor shoes if you have not already.

*your child came home with a number of papers and forms on Thursday last week, please sign and return them as soon as possible if you have not already. The package contained :
  • a school year calendar -for your reference at home
  • a checklist of forms - to keep you organized!
  • a Student Verification Form (white) - please verify the information, make any necessary changes, sign and return with your child
  • the Acceptable Use of Technology Agreement - read it over with your child.  Both your child and yourself need to initial and sign both sides, then return it to school.
  • Informed Consent for Student Participation and Acknowledgment of Risks - please read this form carefully, complete, sign and return
  • Permission letter  - to go on Learning Walks and to the park at Arc-en-Ciel, please sign and return
* On Friday, your child also came home with letter about the School Council Fundraiser, Chocolate sales. Everyone benefits from the purchases made from the funds raised! Please support this initiative by selling chocolates at your place of work, or to family and friends. Children are not to go door-to-door. If at any time you would like more boxes of chocolate to sell, drop a note to the school or send me a note through the blog and we will send more home.

*While each child came home with a school agenda, most teachers will not be using agendas in the junior grades, we will be making use of classroom websites and blogs to pass along information. You can follow my blog by subscribing at the bottom of this page.
Mme Corriveau has her blog at http://madamecorriveau.blogspot.ca/

Please feel free to drop me a line or leave me a message using my parent contact form on the side of the blog.  If your child is going to be absent, or late, or you would like to set up an appointment, or you just want me to be aware of something that may be affecting your child, it's easy to reach me.

I look forward to seeing you all at Program Night on Wednesday, Sept 12, at 6:30, starting in the gym. Afterwards, I will be in Room 110.
